The Employee Free Choice Act would allow for card-check authorization of unions, and strenghtens penalties in cases of retaliation.

 

According to American Rights at Work, 94% of employers resist workers’ efforts to form unions, 49% illegally threaten to shut down the worksite. Intimidation is common, recourse rare. The American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and major US and European corporations succesfully lobbied China to reduce workers' rights in proposed labor legislation. These corporations routinely claim corporate investment will encourage democratization. This report indicates the opposite.

The Chinese workers in a Danish-owned electronic plant defy the factory owners and the official trade union, go on strike for a month, and win. After continued harassment and the firing of union organizers, the United Federation of Danish Workers lends its solidarity.
